Contemporary refurbishment for Kolkata home

Furniture: Ochre at Home

Kolkata-based A Square Designs has designed the Alipore Apartment, which is a residential project spread over 33,000 sq. ft. The client wanted to refurbish the twenty-year-old apartment nestled in a green posh neighbourhood, which would be for a young family. They looked for a contemporary home with modern amenities while retaining antique furniture pieces. The firm started with demolishing some of the walls to expand the bathrooms and bedrooms, along with extending the kitchen to include a utility area. Artwork, antique furniture pieces and custom-designed furniture.

Upon entering a crafted wooden door, the visitor would find a Pichwai painting of Srinathji on the adjacent wall. The foyer imbibes a relaxed environment with a blue feature wall decorated with artwork by Seema Kohli, along with antique beige marble flooring with ivory marble inlay. The console has malachite accents, while the antique chair is refurbished. The living room features sofas, a brightly-coloured painting and a large mirror. A coffee table is made up of nine components, which is accentuated with semi-precious stone inlay. A lounge chair is upholstered in Indian paisley fabric.

The dining room features wooden panelling that conceals cabinets, along with wallpaper and artworks with Bratin Khan and Thota Vaikuntam. The conservatory allows the inhabitants to enjoy the outdoors surrounded by greenery, which is done by covering the open balcony with glass. Patterned tile flooring and white outdoor furniture with bright cushions maintain a Mediterranean ambience, along with track lighting fitted in the ceiling.

The mother’s bedroom features neutral shades with vintage floral wallpaper, along with an antique two-poster colonial-style bed and tropical foliage curtains for the sister’s room. The couple’s room has a high headboard, and the room opens out to the glass balcony.
