Contemporary setting for Vadodara farmland home

Mumbai-based Atelier Design N Domain has designed the Ohana House in Vadodara, a farmland residence inspired by spending time together as a family. The word ‘Ohana’ has Spanish origins, meaning ‘family bond’ – and maximises natural light and contemporary lifestyle in its design. Calibrated granite-clad walls and fluted metal screen towards the garden comprise the entrance driveway and vehicular drop-off. A blank entrance façade with a single door marks the entry point of the house, which is spread over 13,790 sq. ft.

A large brass sculpture by Navin Chahande welcomes the visitors at the foyer, and the layout ensures ample morning sunlight and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The entrance is flanked by a skylit waiting space and a prayer space on the right by passing a water body, and the elongated verandah connects the functional spaces at the ground level. On the way, the visitor will see a ceramic and metal art installation by Gopinath Subbanna, which announces the arrival of the living spaces.

The formal living room is a tall rectangular volume with floor-to-ceiling corner glazing, which looks beyond the landscape. Informal seating is set against the bar, which is finished in micro-concrete and high-sheen corrugated copper. Soft mood lighting converts the naturally-lit verandah space into a party area at night, separated by large sliding doors and a black slate-clad powder room.

A metal and wood open staircase leads up on top of a shallow water body, featuring freestanding metal and aluminium screen in a random series of horizontal slats. The pattern is echoed on the external wall of the staircase, giving the visitor a glimpse of the landscape outside.

Dark-toned furniture, fabric-clad walls and ceiling punctuated by track lights add to the media room and lounge experience. It extends out into a wood-clad balcony, as a cantilevered wood-clad box sandwiched between the floor slabs and above the swimming pool. Dark grey, wood and a camel-toned bed back define masculinity to the son’s bedroom, while the daughter’s bedroom features white-stained oakwood and English colours symbolizing her love for fashion blogging and journalism.

A large pool with a built-in bar is housed between the frangipani trees, and the adjoining wooden pool deck has an all-glass gym on one side and a shaded informal gazebo at the other. The fluted solid wooden backdrop of the gazebo features a concealed door leading to the in-house spa and changing facilities, along with a 40-ft. floating granite bench against a backdrop of staggered calibrated granite walls and pampas grass.
