A central open-to-sky courtyard on the second floor and lots of greenery: these are just two of the many interventions that make brighten this space. Located at the heart of Ghaziabad (UP), Studio An-V-Thot designed this, the Yashoda Superspeciality Hospital & Cancer Institute. A hundred-bed facility spread across seven floors, the hospital has a total built-up area of 50,000 sq ft.

Pergolas above the courtyard, made with a combination of colorful hanging glass panels and MS cross sections, create a lightwell full of colorful shadows within the hospital’s core.

Adding to the theme of color as therapy is an art room adjacent to the courtyard. The interaction of the patient with light and shadow as well as colors is the highlight of the design concept. Say Principal Architects & Interior Designers, Ankita Sweety and Pratyoosh Chandan, “The concept is to heal through light and color keeping the patient’s and attendant’s utmost importance at its core.”

A variety of materials are in play to give the interiors the desired effect. Sweety and Chandan say, “We have used a combination of Golden Emperador Italian stone, off-white and yellow Corian, laminates, clear and lacquered glass, a combination of grid and gypsum ceiling, and stretched fabric ceiling along with a lot of colorful paintings to cheer up the atmosphere.”

Segregation of spaces was done keeping in mind progressive zoning as well as departmental inter-relation while giving utmost importance to the patient and attendant’s care through guided and uncluttered circulation.

As one walks into the campus, a multilevel parking facility with a dab of yellow structural members and peripheral vehicular access in patterned flooring sets the stage for the hospital block, standing as a monolithic structure of a single cuboidal volume.

The facade is designed in layers of a variety of different shades of greys, accentuating horizontal lines to add depth of character. The skin of these layers is designed with varying sunlight intake capacities depicting progressive zoning from ground upwards with changing functional requirements. The materials used in doing so are a combination of exposed concrete, dark grey stacked slate stone, aluminum composite panels and uniform series of glass panels.

Adding a statement to this structure is a combination of an array of small square punctures guiding light routes, which are placed in a random pattern and interestingly run across the dark grey layer of the complete front side facade. This simplicity of randomness helps in developing curiosity in the onlookers while breaking the monotony of Grey distributions. Intervals of wrought iron grillwork on the boundary wall also add to the character.
