Factors that define design in 2022

Text: Meeta B. Talwar, Head of Retail and Styling, Mangrove Collective, Faridabad

The concept of home has been redefined in the post-pandemic world, where residences now accommodate our workspaces, study and play areas. Before the Covid-19 scenario, people used private spaces far more than the common areas. Due to the travel restrictions involved, people now spend a significant amount of time indoors. Thus, the architecture and interior design now rethink the layout and design of habitable spaces.

Over the last few years, homeowners have become conscious of living healthy and sustainable lifestyles. They look for brands that align with the same mindset, which lives in the local markets and homegrown brands. Indian furniture brands now manufacture high-quality bespoke furniture and accessories. The appreciation of looking inwards was propelled due to the pandemic and has started a revolution in interior design.

As space optimisation, flexibility and comfort are focused upon, remote working spaces and previously unused corners now become niches for rest. The pandemic has caused a substantial shift in people’s spending habits, as they now deeply appreciate homegrown brands. Due to the disruptions in the supply chain of imported furniture due to the lockdowns, furniture buyers now enjoy the international design and quality standards offered by local furniture brands. We see an increase in collaboration between clients and designers, leading to customised furniture that reflects the customer’s lifestyle and aesthetic sense.

As homeowners spend more time indoors, they prioritise wellbeing and comfort over aesthetics and luxury. Thus, they enjoy conscious and harmonious lifestyles and furniture strive to serve their customers better.
