Garage To library

Tjome, Norway

The architects transformed an old garage located on the small island of Tjøme in Norway, into a library, while preserving the light original elements of the space. Surrounded by leafy canopies lined with timber, the space also has a co-joined kitchen and a workspace, and has been planned keeping to the original size of the area.
The saw-tooth roof was installed in vertical strips of timber and punctuated by irregularly sized windows, compared to the garage's gabled roofline. Eco-friendly materials such as wood, stone, and concrete dominatethe design elements of the library.

The walls are elevated in all directions in order to optimize the number of bookshelves. The windows are integrated into the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in order to create an exciting geometrical space to let the daylight enter the space.
