Victorian-style design for Thane home

Photographer: Studio Kunal Bhatia

Mumbai-based Design Lab Vyoma has designed Seth’s Residency in Thane, an apartment at the topmost level of a high-rise building overlooking green mountains and a river. Spread over 5000 sq. ft., it was challenging to accommodate the diverse preferences associated with a multi-generational family. A Victorian-style architectural design with large spaces was chosen to deviate from the look of a regular city home.

The foyer, living area, kitchen, and master bedroom are strongly influenced by period architecture except for the children’s rooms which are done in a contemporary style and add surprise and discovery to the project. A balcony overlooking the hills has a swing for the elderly couple, while a modern home theatre is reserved for the couple and their children. Double-glazed large French windows maintain a lower temperature, thereby raising indoor air quality with enhanced energy efficiency. A flexible furniture layout and large spaces allow for free cross-ventilation in the house.

Local craftsmen were hired to blend traditional art with international design aesthetics through carvings, patterns, and moldings reminding the family of their homeland. This can be further seen in the furniture, carpets, lighting, and artifacts that have been custom-made to suit the design. Modern technology such as home automation systems, wireless WiFi, bathroom fixture, smart kitchen solutions, and home theatre system have been blended into classical aesthetics.
