Sustainability in Indian weddings

Text: Prerana Agarwal Saxena, Theme Weavers Designs, Gurugram

Weddings are memorable milestones of life, and everybody loves a personalised wedding. While celebrating the union of two people, one forgets the environmental impact of a wedding. Sustainability is important in today’s weddings, which is why environmental conservation must be intelligently handled. It is commonly assumed that sustainable weddings must be downsized and minimalistic, but one can have luxurious celebrations while being environmentally conscious. For example, sustainable weddings need not be held in a barn or a forest.

Look for venues that actively minimise their carbon footprint for an ecological wedding, such as using renewable and alternate energy sources. An on-site composting facility would save the food wastes, while an outdoor marquee could be arranged with the local cloth. Green hotels use ecological practices, reduce travelling time and serve as a centralised location. While the guests are served, sustainability in catering isn’t considered. Choose locally-sourced food that reduces transportation costs, while supporting local farmers and economies. Reusable leaves, silver or bamboo cutlery are great options and have a strict food menu. For the remaining food, either compost it or donate it to shelter homes.

Use local and non-invasive flowers for décor, which prevent exploitation in the supply chain. Use traditional or preserved flowers, and LED lights to illuminate the spaces. Digital invitations or physical invitations on plantable seed paper are great options, while sand art and blown glass décor support regional craftsmen. Instead of plastic confetti, use hemp, pure linen or rice.
