Top automation lighting trends in 2022

Mr. Alok Hada, Director, Anusha Technovision Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai

As we have entered 2022, we are still experimenting with smart homes and automation systems. Traditional lighting systems are now replaced with lower-cost and environmentally-conscious alternatives, which is due to increased consumer awareness and automation technology. The top four smart home automation trends this year are:

  • Energy-efficiency and sustainability

Smart homes offer optimal performance by including internet-connected technology that allows remote monitoring and an enhanced user experience. More homes are expected to incorporate smart and energy-efficient automation systems, which promote lower usage, reduced energy consumption and compatibility with renewable energy sources such as solar power.

Automated lighting systems alter their intensity depending on the number of people in the room and the amount of available daylight. Light dimmers maximise natural light and keep the interiors warm or cool, along with the use of motorised blinds and similar window treatments to reduce carbon emissions.

  • Smart sensors

These enhance the performance of smart homes and automation, making them advanced, user-friendly and decluttered. Occupancy sensors turn on or turn off equipment depending on user presence, preventing power wastage due to lights and air-conditioners left on. They are used with motor sensors to activate security cameras and send alerts to smartphones, while smoke and carbon dioxide detectors reduce the risk of fire.

  • Home theatre systems

As post-pandemic homes are now designed for unrestricted movie theatre access, they have a home theatre system. It combines lighting, motorised blinds, a sound system and a screen to be accessed and controlled from a single smartphone, tablet or remote. One can turn on these accessories, browse content, adjust the volume, turn down the lights and press the play button in the comfort of their home.

  • Security

It is believed that security and access control systems will now integrate lighting, alarm and closed-circuit video management into a single interface. Motion sensors would be used along with integrating security features such as an Intrusion Detection System and an IP-based Video Door Phone on remote smartphone devices to monitor, record visitor access, and manage electronic locks.
