Calming ambience for Goan house

Architecture: Costa Architects

Pune-based ARTis Design has designed the Gaonker’s Residence, which is a residential project spread over 1800 sq. ft. in Goa. Designed for a family of three, they wanted a home with clean lines, functional designs and a calm environment. The spacious home with Portuguese-style architecture initially began with a modern design, but the firm incorporates traditional elements as well.

Upon entering, one finds a Goan-style entrance with traditional balcao seating and a sliding door leading to the living space. The Satvario tiling lends a luxurious element to the otherwise monochromatic scheme. The living, dining and kitchen areas were interlinked open spaces, so the firm established a connection between the mandir and dining space.

The living room has neutral tones with an interesting mandir design with a backlit alabaster sheet. Soft-grey textured wallpaper lends a simple look. The kitchen is designed in acrylic sheets for under-counter cabinets and laminates for the kitchen countertops.

White walls and ceilings transition into grey as one enters the parents’ bedrooms on the ground floor, which has wooden wainscoting. The son’s room has darker soft furnishings with a glazed wardrobe unit to make the room appear spacious. The master bedroom uses laminates, pinewood-finished veneer, a platform bed with a maroon bed back, and a small semi-closed walk-in closet with a wardrobe.
