Dynamic Fusion of Old & New

Unboxed Coworking
Chaukor Studio, Noida
Design brief and aim:
The space was designed as a comprehensive complex of a variety of workspaces, collaborative spaces, recreational areas and common utilities, from an approximately 12,000 sq ft. industrial building.

How this was accomplished:
The available configuration of an industrial unit was recreated into an open-plan workspace where the junctions are designed as informal breakout zones, creating constant collision amongst co-workers and enhancing interaction. The service lobby was transformed into an informal exhibition area, and a memoir of the building’s past, and is intended to create a buzz of discussion and debate, bolstered by the book racks designed around the lobby area.
The spatial character of different spaces is modified with the use of complementary patterns and textures, against the backdrop of a roughened floor and undulated walls. The bamboo-wood detailing on the ceiling complements the earthen hues of natural surfaces and finishes. Ceiling elements are designed to resemble various parts of machinery that have been integrated throughout the space.
How green was my project:
Various salvaged goods from the factory, including metal frames, door and window shutters and industrial scaffoldings were reconfigured to create ceiling elements, partitions and custom furniture: the translucent partitions for discussion pods were created using reclaimed lattices and wooden shutters.

Happily ever after:
The project is a fine example of an evolutionary design approach that gives the space its distinct character; a dynamic mix of old and new while providing a workspace that is humane and aesthetically sensible.
