Goa Chitra’s artifact of the day: Bhutto
Bhutto is the name given to a man-made basket, for agricultural work like carrying cow dung, compost, etc. The cane-woven piece is made with handles on either side to distribute weight among two people.
At Goa Chitra, all collections of objects tell stories of multiple communities, sustainability and utility. One such story transpired during the Goa Chitra Residency of 2019.
Victor Hugo Gomes, founder and curator of Goa Chitra Museum narrated, “During the residency, we travelled to remote areas of Canacona and met J. Velip who at the ripe age of 80 was still making these baskets for his family’s use. Sturdy, intricate, sustainable and truly beautiful, these baskets are a work of art that is disappearing as the next generation opt for jobs that bring in more money and greater dignity of labor”.
