Hyderabad-based architecture and design firm Vistaar Associates have designed the Tadoba Resort near Chandrapur, Maharashtra. Nestled in the Chimur hills, the erstwhile Gondwana Empire was heavily influenced by the Mughals and Rajputs, which imparts a historical, cultural and architectural importance to the site. The firm worked around the structure’s architectural splendour with a modern touch to the Gond tradition, instead of adopting a conventional tent-and-wooden-cottage route.

Mounds of earth sheltering the walkway offer an aesthetic appeal and protect walkers from the harsh summers. The forest resort is spread over 13.5 acres with sixteen cottage swellings that are reminiscent of the Gond culture. An open bath retains the visitor’s oneness with nature while respecting their privacy, while a private plunge pool in every cottage allows for a private experience. A natural forest stream flowing through the site allows for expeditions, while the use of local material and craftsmanship makes for a traditional experience with an ecological approach. Old wood joinery and patterns on the Tandur stone and shaded open spaces allow us to preserve existing trees. Betham cherla stone with grey oxide finish has been used for the interiors, while the thatched roof, mud-plastered walls, and natural stone are reminiscent of the Gond culture. Cottages have been built around bamboo plantations to preserve solitude.
