How to use stone in exterior spaces?

Ramesh Bhandari, Director, A-Class Marble, New Delhi

Outdoor living spaces are a unique opportunity to custom design and material for bespoke exteriors, Natural stone is directly quarried from the earth without significant chemical processing, and its size and shape can be customized for landscaping, steps and flagstones for patios, walkways and pools. Stone veneer is manufactured from natural stone as well and is used in outdoor kitchens, fire pits, fireplaces and accent walls. Stonework becomes focal points and accent pieces as well, such as a seating wall, an interior backsplash and stone risers.

Natural stone has a matte-textured appearance until it starts fading due to time and weathering, which is why we must not apply the same cleaning and maintenance treatment to natural stones. On the other hand, we must regularly clean natural stone surfaces to retain their appearance and texture, and prolong their lifespan.

Natural stone outdoor flooring can be maintained by sweeping and mopping with warm or cold water, the frequency of which depends on the vehicles’ foot traffic, foliage shredding and dusting intensity. Choose cleaning brushes and mops with smooth bristles, along with hand dusters. If one is using machine vacuums and sweepers, take care that it doesn’t damage the surface. Avoid using acidic cleaning solutions along with home remedies such as vinegar and lemon juice on calcareous stones due to their calcium-based content. Outdoor spaces are prone to water clogging and moisture retention, which is why slopes must be created at strategic angles to drain water.
