Restrained material palette for New Delhi home

Photography: Studio NAC

New Delhi-based team3 has designed the B-10, which is a residential project spanning 7198 sq. ft. It is designed for a client close to the construction industry and has worked on landmark modernist projects in the late 1980s. They wanted their home to reflect their appreciation for quality construction, authentic and durable natural materials, and a minimalistic space that remains connected to the outdoors. Located in an upscale locality, the three-story residence has a stilt floor and basement. Each floor’s height is expanded to allow for larger volumes, along with deep balconies as the plot remains open from all sides.

The façade uses a material palette of timber, grey sandstone, and a split face-finish for visual texture. The timber on the frontage, made from acetylated wood sourced from renewable forests, includes warmth and finesse to the façade. The home is designed according to its context, by-laws, Vaastu, and climate. The stilt floor opens onto multiple lawns in the front and left of the building. An open-plan layout allows for natural light, while the basement prevents unwanted noise and light to house an entertainment section.

A landscaped cut-out brings in light and ventilation to the basement, and all the other levels house expansive living, dining, and kitchen areas. Nine bedrooms are accommodated on the ground, first, and second floors. One sees a manicured deck and a leveled terrace garden on the terrace. The interior palette primarily uses Basaltino stone and timber, and a timber ceiling conceals the required services. Landscaped areas such as large projecting balconies and a terrace garden connect the home to its surroundings.
