Central light installation for Mumbai restaurant

Photographer: Sehrish Qureshi

Mumbai-based architecture and design firm Saniya Kantawala Design have designed The Terrace: A Maiden Affair, a high-end restaurant targeted at the millennial and GenX generation. The client brief was to create a simple and minimalistic décor that suited the feminine perspective as well. Thus, the choice of material, colour and signage add to the visual appeal of the space. It has been conceptualised keeping in mind the social media aspect, therefore, attractive colours, balanced tones and a practical approach was necessary.

The diners enter the restaurant through a 600 sq. ft. terrace garden, which has a central light installation and surrounding plantation. The installation is in the shape of a tree, which lights up the entire outdoor segment and makes it a photogenic element. A screen adds an aesthetic element and complements the décor, while the partitions layer up the space. White iron chairs have been used, with pops of color used in the cushions and mattresses. Quirky bent-chair plates accessorize the walls, resembling an art garden.

Comprising a 2200 sq. ft. indoor area, the restaurant has been divided into several zones with a variety of seating areas – high-community seating and circular booth seating. Brass and pink tones, with dramatic jewel-shaped drop lights strategically placed over the eclectic seating areas, are the major spots of décor.  The terrace is the highlight of the project, with a central glass bar and planters on one side, which have been painted on the bar counter as well. Wood, fabric, and brass have been used to create the bar.
