A precinct that promotes student interaction stays rooted in the local aesthetic and reflects a contemporary vibe; those were the talking points kept in mind in setting up the IMI Bhubaneswar campus.
The design of the campus flows from the central plaza, which is the main interactive node of the space. Here, an iconic tower acts as a wind breaker, and, along with a water court, acts as a natural exhaust to create a micro climate that provides solace in the hot summers of the region. From here, interactive zones for students fan out, in the shape of a shaded walkway between the library and the academic block, while the large overhangs of the library block cast shadows all over the central plaza and create comfortable outdoor spaces.

Particular attention was also paid to making the project eco-sensitive. Water bodies scattered through the landscape encourage rain water harvesting, while locally available materials such as laterite and khondalite were used in the outdoor areas. Indoors, there is an extensive use of low VOC paints, and a huge glass wall in the library atrium allows for optimum daylight penetration.
As famous architect Frank Gehry said, “Architecture should speak for its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.” This design is an attempt to do just that.
