‘Jagali katte’ inspiration for Chikmagalur residence

Photographer: Vishal J.

Bengaluru-based Int-Hab Architecture+ Design Studio has designed Malenadu Mane, a residence in Chikmagalur where aesthetics, functionality, and cost-efficiency were a priority.

Located at Sunkhsale in Chikmagalur, the design was influenced by the surrounding green topography, mountainous views, and coffee plantation on the site. The project integrates itself into forming a close relationship with nature in its rustic and contemporary structure and design. Clean lines and minimalism add a classic and contemporary touch to the exterior façade.

Spacious verandahs (inspired by the ‘jagali katte’ in Kannada), sunken reading spaces, and mezzanine floor reflect the rural Malnad region. Public, semi-private, and private zones are seamlessly connected with direct access to the exterior greenery with large openings.

A double-height living room is designed along with the mezzanine, which acts as the first floor of the house. The top floor features an overhang that shelters a balcony overlooking the surrounding hills. Natural materials, subdued hues, and comfortable furnishings are used to imbibe a no-fuss rustic décor. Old wooden doors and frames are reused to make the dining table and a bookshelf, lending vintage charm to the interiors.
