Lead architect: Ar. Aroty Panyang

Located on a beautiful farmland in Tamil Nadu, two hours away from Bengaluru, the project spanning 200 sq. ft. was commissioned by a nature-loving family who had built their new home on the site. As the house was constructed in a modern minimalistic style, the gazebo was to be more ornate and sculptural. It is built using several types of bamboo and cane, and uses multiple arches and ring beams with an underlying framework to give the structure its length.

Three openings on the upper side are for light and ventilation, and a skylight was improvised during the construction process to illuminate the intricate latticework. The firm sourced high quality mature bamboo and treated it with natural salts, which is a preservation technique that increases its durability by several decades and makes it viable for permanent structures.

Ar. Aroty Panyang says, “There is a unique uplifting quality to contemporary bamboo structures that is difficult to achieve with conventional materials. One of the most attractive features of a modern bamboo structure lies in its intricacy and ability to invoke a sense of awe and wonder in anyone who engages with it. For us, the meditation gazebo stands as a testament to the beauty and versatility of bamboo, and what it can be used to create.”
