Monochromatic beige color palette for Mumbai house

Mumbai-based Design Lab Vyoma has designed The Sanctum House, a residential project spread over 1300 sq. ft. The name symbolizes a harmonious and elegant meld of design vocabulary. Located in an old residential apartment, the firm had to deal with old wooden and brick piers, metal-jacketed columns, and beams of various depths running across the building. These constraints were to be seamlessly amalgamated into the new design, maintaining its tranquility.

An open-plan layout was planned for the house where the living, dining, and kitchen spaces co-exist, allowing the family to reconnect and spend quality time together. One of the major challenges was to maximize the windows that were possible only on the shorter side of the apartment, while the longer sides remained walled. Therefore, huge ventilation windows were designed for the three aforementioned spaces.

Numerous freestanding columns and beams comprise the internal wall alignment with these existing conditions on-site. Monochromatic shades of beige bind together the living, dining, and kitchen spaces, which is brightened up with cushions and paintings. Due to the existing beams, the ceiling design runs in varying thicknesses and depth thus highlighting each space. Finer details such as brass edges, Armani brown Italian marble, and beveled mirror on columns and false ceiling add character and space to the living, dining, and kitchen space.

Deeper tones of black add intrigue to the master bedroom, while the cappuccino walls balance the aesthetics and dimension to the space. A custom-made light installation distracts one from the freestanding column in the middle of the circulation space of the room. A niche carved out from the black is the backdrop from the installation. Bold blue shades in various textures and prints on the soft furnishings and curtains add a fun vibe in the room.
