Gurugram-based architecture and design firm ivpartners has designed the Punjab Grill, a fine dine restaurant in BKC, Mumbai. The 3575 sq ft area demanded an exclusive ambience that reflects the authentic flavours of Punjab among the other diners within the precinct. The design is a contemporary recreation of the ‘land of five rivers’ and the spicy cuisine that it imbibes.

The pre-function has a brand logo in gold shimmer while the façade gives one a brief glimpse of the dramatic interiors. An arrival foyer with an upfront awards wall beyond the glass doors etched with gold, welcomes in the diner. The upfront protracted bar on the right is highlighted with a frosted mix mirrored background reflecting the displays. It is further accentuated with frames and suspended lighting fixtures. The central dining space has mid-century modern furniture in multiple seating configurations. The entire space is done up in neutral colors beneath a series of pendant chandeliers.

Foregrounded by banquet seating and vintage photographs of Punjabi culture under chandeliers create a functional space. A dramatic open kitchen fronted by a buffet counter and a free-standing cold counter form the centerpieces. The banquet is spread out on white Italian marble counters beneath single-light suspensions.

Inspired by the traditional craftwork of Punjab, the ‘phulkari’ and ‘jaali’ have been interpreted with flooring patterns and paneled walls, mounted with tile motifs in the central dining spaces. Vignettes of erstwhile royal Punjab have been integrated into the interiors, with defined circulation spaces and multiple seating options. The jaali and phulkari patterns on the wooden panels have been inspired by the havelis of Punjab in the signature colors of gold, black and white. The marble floor is further complemented by the glass curtain walls and a sunshade with louvered wooden blinds.
