Retro colors for Mumbai home

Photographer: Prashant Bhat

Mumbai-based Aum Architects has designed the Barrington 4, a 2BHK residential project for a retired couple. Spread over 1625 sq. ft., the client wanted a comfortable, simple, and elegant project.

Retro-inspired designs are chosen for the living space, with a reading corner that has open shelving at the entrance. The seating area comprises a neutral-colored sofa and a reading chair against the turmeric-yellow focal wall with moldings and grooves. Following a soft color palette, the chairs have a tall backrest with a floral print in the dining room at the other end. The kitchen is extended to have a mandir and a breakfast zone, also connected to the dining room. Fluted glass, wood, and duck-egg blue matte finish make up the breakfast area, and the kitchen is finished in terracotta and white leather-finished laminate. Metalwork in the dining room is loosely influenced by retro vibes.

White, tan, and lavender tones are used for the master bedroom; as one enters, the small passage leading to the room has a chequered wallpaper that connects to the bedside wall. Tan leatherette and antique studs are used for the headboard, set against the lavender back wall with groove detailing. The citrus-toned dresser has a big round mirror fixed onto a pure white high-gloss background, and the wardrobe reflects the same design used for the headboard.

Sunflower yellow and grey is chosen for the daughter’s bedroom, with a linear geometry on the wardrobe side giving it the look of a panel. A linework wallpaper and a complimentary wire mesh hanging light consists of a study area.
