Tons of sacred walls

100 Walls Church, Cebu, Philippines

CAZA, New York, USA
Design brief and aim
The design brief for the 100 Walls Church was to challenge what sacred spaces look like today.

How this was accomplished
Within the church, no room is completely bound by four walls. A multitude of doors and passages remind us that there are as many paths as there are lives, and that a sacred space today should draw out meaning in its inscrutability.
Each wall is placed in a singular direction so that the structure is completely opaque from one vantage and transparent from the opposite view. The church invites us to wander its grounds and discover sunken gardens, pockets of blue light, and an enigmatic profusion of talismanic walls.

Happily ever after
The church balances the real practical needs of worshipers and users with the desire to create a cultural icon that represents the community.
